This project places particular emphasis on the participation of people from all walks of life, supporting diversity and democratising culture in rural areas, as well as incorporating strategies for gender equality, intergenerational engagement, and the participation of children and young people.

There are already initiatives in place that are shaping this partnership: SacraExperience, at the Lugar de Pincelo in Chantada (Ribeira Sacra), in collaboration with organisations such as Cinema Palleiriso, Chantada Council, the Provincial Museum Network of Lugo, the Ronsel Foundation, Ocean Savane and the University of Vigo, amongst others.

It is a project involving partnerships and networks between different local authorities, linking villages with up to 200 inhabitants—some of which have as few as six residents—and which also offers an expanded cultural programme that connects rural and urban areas.

The main venue for the proposed activities will be a 100m² multi-purpose room in Pincelo (Parish of A Sariña) in the municipality of Chantada, Lugo.

The partner venues where the extended activities will take place are mainly: Pazo de Tor in San Xoán de Tor in the municipality of Monforte de Lemos, Cinema Palleiriso in Garabelos (Chantada-Lugo), Praia da Cova in the municipality of O Saviñao, the Chantada Cultural Centre, the Church of Chouzán in the municipality of Carballedo, and Pazo de San Pedro de Bembibre in the municipality of Taboada. All are rural areas with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants or with a low population density.

In the case of the two cross-regional collaborations, these are network-based activities that will be showcased; specifically, Vicente Galaso (Balearic Islands) will present his travelling exhibition Miradas Sacras at the Church of Chouzán in the municipality of Carballedo, as well as at ASDEME (Chantada). As for Proaza and Llanes in Asturias, with cross-residencies in the creation of the cultural network in rural areas, Rurealidades will participate in the talks at the ‘Youth in the Villages’ event. And also in Senegal, with the screening of the work from the artist residency at Sacraexpandido 2026.

This interdisciplinary project encompasses a range of wide-ranging programmes, from purely environmental projects that bring together art and science, to those that focus on small, scattered communities or villages near the River Miño, as well as initiatives designed to bring these areas into contact with national and international stakeholders and artists. These help to showcase the landscape and the tangible and intangible heritage of the Ribeira Sacra beyond our borders, through various cultural activities taking place mainly in 2026. All these partnerships ultimately serve to highlight the region’s value and explore its people. We analyse their ways of life that link tradition and modernity, as well as the link between childhood/youth and our elders.

It also highlights the importance of nature, which is so vital in these overly virtual times that often distance us from real life and can even lead to physical and mental health issues in adolescence.

In seeking to blend our projects with the value of the local heritage, the company Máis que Románico acts as a guide to the churches and monasteries for artists in residence and for the creators taking part in the sacraforma project. The Ribeira Sacra is a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) and a protected Biosphere Reserve, as well as boasting this magical wine-growing landscape, which stands as an example of authentic nature unlike anywhere else. The rich natural and cultural heritage that surrounds us, where the activities take place, shapes a region and its people with a distinct identity. It is an essential part of this project.

Habitar/nos began as a cultural, social and environmental project set within a semi-abandoned area with little in the way of cultural programming. The focus will be on the small, scattered settlements within this magical landscape. The SacraExperience Cultural Association will lead the project and serve as the base of operations for the activities. It is a cross-cutting project involving partnerships between six municipalities. In the case of SacraExperience, activities will take place in the municipalities of O Saviñao, Carballedo, Taboada, Chantada, Friol and Monforte de Lemos in the province of Lugo, two of which have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.

Programme Activities

Through its Habitar/nos project, SacraExperience seeks a new way of engaging with the local environment, using culture as a connecting thread; it aims to create a cultural network across the region, particularly in small, scattered communities. At the same time, it seeks to establish community spaces for reflection and to promote participatory cultural projects. The initiative is structured around a programme comprising several elements:

Weekend workshops from January to September 2026.

‘Living with Creation’ Residency Programme.

The New Rural Band promoting musical creativity among young people.

The Rural Crea Project runs workshops to promote artistic education for children.

Cultural events such as the Conference on Cultural Management and Rural Entrepreneurship or Youth in the Villages.

Drama-themed tastings.

International partnerships with Cuba and Senegal.

Sacra Experience, as the home of the inclusive dance company Experimentadanza, is involved in various projects created in this space in collaboration with the Emalcsa Foundation and the Coruña Municipal Band. This year’s project, De corpo e palabra, features the 45 musicians of the Municipal Band, 14 performers with and without disabilities, Mercedes Peón, the poets Andrea Nunes and Eva Veiga, and the singer Su Garrido.

Habitar/nos also contributes to promoting the region and champions its natural, scenic and wine-growing heritage as a space for creativity and engagement with the arts and culture. It focuses on three key areas:

On-site environmental education: botany, geology, viticulture, etc.

Artistic and cultural education: talks, workshops on visual arts, ceramic painting, etc.

The connection between health and nature: featuring workshops and experiences such as shimrinyoku forest bathing, art therapy, tai chi, therapeutic arts, breathing exercises and yoga, amongst others.

In seeking to blend our projects with the value of the local heritage, the company Máis que Románico acts as a guide to the churches and monasteries in the area for artists-in-residence and workshops. In addition, sustainable events for small groups will be held with full respect for the environment, taking place in communal vineyards and oak groves. The entire project is based on a circular economy supported by the products and services of local residents and winegrowers (local accommodation, wine, locally sourced produce, etc.).

Programme and Training Modules

1.
